Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer Mens Watch 114270-BKAO

The Modest Rolex5
As someone already stated, the Rolex Explorer is not about bling. It's not about flash and ostentation.

It's understated elegance is likely to go unnoticed by all but the most knowledgeable, but among those who know watches, the Explorer is one of the most recognizable watches in the world.

That's why I like it so much. It is a Rolex, through and through. It has the distinction of being the first watch to be carried to the top of Mt. Everest, yet it is just as appropriate for a black tie event or the boardroom, as it is for a trek through the wilderness.

Quiet, refined, elegant, and rugged, those are the qualities that define both the Explorer and legendary adventurers.

This watch is for the connoisseurs5
The Rolex Explorer I, as it is often called, was launched in 1954, and evolved from models from the 1930s. This model has something of a cult following, creating at times a long waiting list. The Explorer I is the watch that has stayed closest to the core values of Rolex over its long history. Thus, the Explorer remains timeless, rugged, elegant, solid and minimalist.

As a fellow commentator stated, this watch is not for the wanna-be's. This is for people with a genuine interest in quality, and in the aesthetics and history of Rolex wristwatches. Do not let the relatively low price confuse you. This is one of the greatest watches made today.

A good instrument, an good companion5
I both my Rolex Exploter 6 years ago and i must tell that i am not disapointed. As a ereporter, most of my career as war correspondet, i submited my Explorer to harsh conditions. We went to the amazon jungle, to the arab deserts, to the ice in Antartida and so on. The watch never let me down. It becames not only a good tool but, sorry for the sentimentalism, a good compaion too. Is a firs class watch. Some will say that the lack of calendar is something that one cannot forgive. Well, i would say that the Explorer I with this huge manufecturer is not a watch for the gays in the Wall Street scenario. Mário Chimanovitch

Rolex watch5
Having wanted a Rolex since I was a teenager, I found a used one an got an elderly watchmaker to teach me how to service it completely. The quality is outstanding, inside and out. The case design, to protect the mechanism, is insuperable. The mechanism is built like a tank, built to last a lifetime, though it needs to be serviced every 5 years. It is probably the finest production watch in the world. I like it better than my Vacheron in every way.
There are a few negatives, though. Adjusting the regulator is a real pain and requires a special tool. You must partially disassemble the watch and remove the balance to adjust it, or risk breaking the balance staff. Then reassemble and wear the watch and see how it runs on your wrist. I adjusted it 12 times before I got mine keeping time as it should, to 3 seconds per day error. This watch would be better if it had a micro-regulator.
The band wears fast if it is two-tone or solid gold. If you want durability, buy the stainless steel watch.
Rolex and all the major watch brands have made it impossible to find replacement parts since the year 2000. This means you must send your watch to Rolex and pay them $1000 to service your watch, when what you need is a $50 part. This is really hurting the watch repair business. The inability to buy parts, in my opinion, dramatically reduces the investment potential of any product.
Buying a Rolex is expensive, but so is owning one. Your best lubricants last about 6 years, so your watch should be serviced every 5 years.
Despite the negatives, I like my Rolexes. I have had three of them since 1994. I bought them all used. My favorite is from 1972 and has a 1570 series mechanism, which I recommend most highly. It is probably the best mechanical watch money can buy.
Go to google and do a search for Rolex 1570 photos :)

My son wants to know when I'm going to die so that he can have it...5
I first saw this watch in Shreeves in San Francisco when I was 13 years old. My father pointed it out to me and said that it was the same one that James Bond wears. (he had recently loaned me "From Russia, With Love". The watch cost $425 at the time. The next time I saw this watch was at UC Berkeley. The legendary research diving instructor Lloyd Austin had one. (we all had Timex's) I came downstairs on my birthday last year and my wife handed me a small green box. She said "I'm tired of shopping for presents twice a year. Here are your presents for the next 8 years." Every so often, one gets a chance to have something that is absolutely the best at what it does. (a Swiss Army knife, a Remington 870, a Mac, etc.) It's not so much a matter of what it costs as it is of what it is. Yeah, it has a tendency to run 15 sec. fast but it's more than a possession, it represents dreams, aspiration, caring... My son really wants it. Let him wait 40 years, then he'll appreciate it.

Elegance and Hardcore Even When the Time Doesn't Matter!5
Well, some great reviews ahead of me.

My Sub has survived hundreds of hours of intense sportfishing in the Pacific Ocean, involving tons of watch surface contact with wire, marlin bills, salt, metal, chrome, and so on......then a wipe with the sleeve gets it ready for hitting the bar. I don't mind admitting that a glance at my thrift store clothes, and sandals, and Submariner, has altogether instigated some intimate encounters with premium tail.

Fits sooooo good compared to others. Seems more appropriate to tall men, 6' +.

It's cheaper to make a sign that says, "Please rob me."3
I purchased this watch almost a year to the date. My intent was to reward myself for many years of hard work. I had read the numerous articles and reviews of Rolex albeit most of them were written by Rolex owners and sellers (jewelers). I decided to start at the top of the Rolex line with the solid gold Daytona.

When I received the watch, I was somewhat awestruck. For weeks, I waited for the perfect occasion to christen my new status symbol. I chose to wear it out to my best friend's bachelor party. Before I continue, allow me to explain the 'laws of Rolex'.

About the watch: While it looks and feels top notch, the Daytona is somewhat underwhelming. Watches have gotten bigger over the years and everyone has seen fifty versions of the analog chronograph. There's also a cruel paradox at play when wearing a Rolex. If you are super rich, everyone assumes that you are wearing an authentic Rolex. So if you drive a Ferrari, then you can purchase a fake Rolex and fool everyone. On the other hand, everyone will assume that the $24k watch on your wrist is a forgery if a Honda Accord is your means of transportation.

That's exactly what happened at the Bachelor party! No one eve noticed the watch for four hours. Everything went terribly wrong when my Daytona caught the eye of one rowdy drunken bar patron. The rube held his arm up, then rolled down his sleeves to reveal an identical Rolex. He shouted, "I bought my Rolex for $120 down at the flea market. How much did you pay for yours?" At that time, everyone noticed my watch and started laughing. What could I say? I tried to play it off but the jokes continued. One partier said, "That's a great looking fake! I hope you didn't pay too much for it." My best fiend, the 'groom' offered me "fifty American" for it.

Several weeks later, I decided to wear it again while taking my wife to dinner. Despite all of the hype, I didn't receive one comment on the watch. In an effort to draw some attention to it, I started checking the time every few minutes. This made my wife nervous. She started asking me if I was bored or forgot to Tivo a television program. When I finally broke down and confessed to my motives. She asked how much I had spent on 'the ghastly thing'. I responded by telling her that 'sometimes it is necessary to spend a little money on the finer things in life'. Needless to say, that didn't appease her curiosity. I wrote the price of the watch on a napkin, then passed it to her. After reading it aloud, she turned pale and stated that she wanted to go home. I tried to offer an explanation but she wouldn't hear another word. After arriving home, she reminded me of all the people living on a 'dollar a day' in the world. She asked me how I could justify spending so much on a 'vanity item'. We haven't had sex in two months now.

Two weeks ago, I decided to give the watch yet another try. This time, I wore the watch to a Christian fellowship meeting at my local church. To my delight, several of the church members took notice and made some flattering remarks. As I was starting to feel vindicated, Pastor Rick asked the dreaded question that all Rolex owners have come to loath, "is that a real one?" My reply, "Yes. As a matter of fact, it is an authentic Rolex." To my dismay, Pastor Rick then warned, "You might want to have it checked by a jeweler because I have seen some fake ones that look absolutely identical." Before I could respond, he added, "How much did you pay for the one?" A friend of mine later told me that my face turned, "beet red" before I excused myself. After taking a few minutes to cool off, I walked out to my car and put the watch in the glove department. Upon returning, I avoided eye contact with everyone and took a seat on the last pew in the back. When the service adjourned, I decided to give my dear pastor a piece of my mind! After everyone departed and we were finally alone, I informed Pastor Rick that his earlier questions and commentary regarding my watch were both insensitive and hurtful. I also conveyed my displeasure in being asked about the price of the watch in front of the entire church. Although he offered me an apology, I could tell that Pastor Rick was puzzled by my strong reaction. After receiving his assurance of confidentiality, I gave him of the approximate price ($23000.00) of the watch. Based on the expression of his face, it was obvious that Pastor Rick had no idea how much a gold Rolex Daytona cost. After several moments of uncomfortable silence he finally said hoarsely, "Very well then." It was obvious that he wasn't pleased with me at all.

In the church parking lot, I discovered that the passenger window of my Honda Accord had been shattered. My heart sank as I approached and noticed that the glove compartment had been left open. The gold Rolex was the only item that was stolen! I was forced to return inside to ask Pastor Rick to call the police. After doing so, he asked me, "Do you think it was a good idea to wear such an expensive item to a place of worship?"

My insurance paid for the 'replacement cost' minus a hefty deductible. Ultimately, I lost around $5000 plus the insurance company raised my premium. As a cherry on top, someone broke into my home later that same week. I guess word gets around fast.

I can't really attest to the accuracy of the time since I only wore it on three occasions. Frankly, I believe it was gaining a few minutes every week but I base that on a plastic digital $25 Ironman watch. Ha! That's the watch that I'm wearing now.

I don't know what I was thinking...2
I really don't know what was going through my mind. I don't have a good job. I don;t have any extra money or anything. Why I decided to max out three credit cards for a $22,000 watch is beyond me.

I was drunk the night I ordered it. 2 days later my Rolex came in the mail. I didn't even remember ordering it. This thing was huge, bulky, and frankly, gaudy. Gold on gold.

I didn't feel important or special or anything when I put it on. I felt like an idiot. It is going to take me so long to pay these credit cards off. This is something I don't need in my life right now as I am going through a whole mess of other issues with my health and marriage. I really screwed things up. This watch has caused a lot of unnecessary stress. I can't believe I did this.

All that aside, the watch does work well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better investment than my stock portfolio (and looks better too)!!, February 5, 2009
Bought my two-tone GMT-II watch in 1992. It is classic time piece and the two-tone is great for dress-up occasions or sport dress. Whether in a suit or shorts, the two-tone looks great and not out of place. The key to a Rolex is having it cleaned and serviced every 5 years or so depending on how often you wear it and how rought you are when wearing it. It will gain or loose time (each watch is different) due to being hand-made and not controlled my a "chip" like a quartz watch.

The dual time-zone capability is great and works flawlessly. If one travels a lot domestically or internationally, you'll learn to use it and love it!!

There are a lot of fakes out there, so research what you want and know what to look for. Buy from well known retailers and the serial numbers can all be looked up to know the exact date of manufacture of the watch. Buyer beware... buy from reputable dealers who you can research in order to build confidence in and with.

Enjoy wearing it... I do!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Watch, January 14, 2008

My wife bought me a two-tone GMT II at Christmas time for a gift. It is a beautiful watch which keeps very good time. It is a little off though only by seconds. It is an investment that I will be proud to be a steward of it until it is passed on to the next generation.
This is a society that is used to throw away items rather than old world craftsmanship. If you are looking for a throw away, look elsewhere. This is a fine timepiece to be handed down through the generations if it is cared for.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love my GMT Master II, March 10, 2009
By DS "DS" (Savannah, GA, USA) - See all my reviews
I bought my two-tone Rolex GMT Master II (116713) three weeks ago in Savannah, GA. It is absolutely beautiful and looks great with both professional clothing and casual wear. So far, the watch 'lost' about two seconds over a week and a half which is great. The quality of the watch is amazing and definitely worth the price. Actually, I love it so much that I have started saving for a Daytona (for my next birthday). This is a timepiece for life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Free Calibration, August 19, 2007
I love my Submariner Oyster Perpetual Date. A Rolex must be calibrated to it's owner. A Rolex will run fast or slow depending on you.
Ask your Jeweler.

She/he will set you up on A CALIBRATION PROGRAM. It may take 1-3 visits to get it tweaked to you.
I am not suprised at these comments.......a fine jeweler would inform one of the calibration process.
If you want/need a Rolex by all means, use a reputable fine jeweler/dealer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tops for what it is, January 6, 2008
By GG "gg reviews" (NJ United States) - See all my reviews
The major consumer magazine gave the Rolex an excellent review about 2 years ago and I concur. First, if as someone stated, their Rolex is off by 30 seconds a day, it is out of specs and Rolex will repair it. That same magazine gave it very high marks for accuracy. A Rolex is a piece of jewelry that is hand made beautifully, and tells time as well as is possible for a mechanical / automatic winding watch. It is truly water resistant and the currently used crystal is almost indestructible. I have had mine for about 10 years and I wear it 24 hours a day, every day. It still shine like fine jewelry, which you won't get after a year or two with a copy, let alone after 10 years. The sweep second hand, fit and finish, and durability carry old world beauty. Maybe it can't be appreciated by some high tech only people, but this is one techy who truly appreciates it. Yes, they are expensive and not for everyone, but if you can appreciate it and have the money, it is worth it. Faces and hands can be changed by Rolex any time you want and when cleaned and checked after about 5 year, it comes back looking like it is brand new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful watch that keeps great time., February 12, 2008
I am always bewildered by the occassional statements of Rolex owners that complain of their watch's inaccuracy. For Rolex and other great Swiss watches that have certified movements, the certification is from Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, which is the institute responsible for certifying the accuracy and precision of wristwatches in Switzerland. The standard for COSC as a chronometer is -5/+6 seconds per day. This figure will be consistent wheather it is fast or slow. Any Rolex owner with a COSC certified chronograph movement, that isn't keeping time within standards, simply needs to have it timed by a Rolex technician. I have a submariner that has been a nearly daily wear watch for 20 years. It has been within COSC specs, +1 second per day, for 20 years. I remember when I bought it new, the Rolex technician explained the mechanism to me and said it is nearly impossible to make a watch run at 0, and since nobody wants a watch to run slow, it is safer to time the watch for 1 second fast.
