The Modest Rolex
As someone already stated, the Rolex Explorer is not about bling. It's not about flash and ostentation.
It's understated elegance is likely to go unnoticed by all but the most knowledgeable, but among those who know watches, the Explorer is one of the most recognizable watches in the world.
That's why I like it so much. It is a Rolex, through and through. It has the distinction of being the first watch to be carried to the top of Mt. Everest, yet it is just as appropriate for a black tie event or the boardroom, as it is for a trek through the wilderness.
Quiet, refined, elegant, and rugged, those are the qualities that define both the Explorer and legendary adventurers.
This watch is for the connoisseurs
The Rolex Explorer I, as it is often called, was launched in 1954, and evolved from models from the 1930s. This model has something of a cult following, creating at times a long waiting list. The Explorer I is the watch that has stayed closest to the core values of Rolex over its long history. Thus, the Explorer remains timeless, rugged, elegant, solid and minimalist.
As a fellow commentator stated, this watch is not for the wanna-be's. This is for people with a genuine interest in quality, and in the aesthetics and history of Rolex wristwatches. Do not let the relatively low price confuse you. This is one of the greatest watches made today.
A good instrument, an good companion
I both my Rolex Exploter 6 years ago and i must tell that i am not disapointed. As a ereporter, most of my career as war correspondet, i submited my Explorer to harsh conditions. We went to the amazon jungle, to the arab deserts, to the ice in Antartida and so on. The watch never let me down. It becames not only a good tool but, sorry for the sentimentalism, a good compaion too. Is a firs class watch. Some will say that the lack of calendar is something that one cannot forgive. Well, i would say that the Explorer I with this huge manufecturer is not a watch for the gays in the Wall Street scenario. Mário Chimanovitch
